Betty Levin has been at Brooklyn College since 1986, where she has helped develop the Master’s of Public Health and Children's Studies programs. She is a founding editor of "Public Health Matters" in the American Journal of Public Health. She is a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, CUNY School of Public Health, Executive Board of PHANYC (Public Health Association of New York City), and founding member of the Pediatric Ethics Committee of New York Presbyterian Hospital. Professor Levin is a medical anthropologist with training in public health, best known for her research on ethical issues in Neonatal Care. She has studied ethical issues in other pediatric areas, HIV/AIDS, palliative care and "Urban Bioethics" (focus on race, class and urbanicity). Active in national professional associations (AAA, ASBH & APHA), she has promoted transdisciplinary work in the social sciences, bioethics, medicine and public health. Her current focus is public health education. She is a graduate of Barnard College (B.A.), Columbia University where she earned both an M.A. and PhD. Dr. Levin has been at Brooklyn College (BC)
since 1986 and in the Doctor of Public Health program (DPH) at the Graduate Center (GC) since 2007. She teaches undergraduate (21W), MPH (791.3/797.3) and doctoral courses (811) on the social background to health, as well as a foundational course (740) and bioethics course (773. She participated in the development of the DPH program at the GC, the MPH program and Children's Studies at BC and the Bioethics Interest Group of the AAA and was founding editor of the department "Public Health Matters" in the American Journal of Public Health. Current activities include: Planning Committee, CUNY School of Public Health; Executive Board of PHANYC (Public Health Association of New York City); and, Pediatric Ethics Committee of New York Presbyterian Hospital (CPMC). Born and raised in NYC, she is indebted to CUNY for her father's college education as well as her opportunity to work with students and colleagues at CUNY.
