1) How many credits do I need to take for the MA? Answer: 33 credits
2) When is your application deadline? Students are admitted throughout the academic year. When your application is complete, you will be considered for the following semester.
3) Do you require the GRE’s: Students must demonstrate that they have obtained a BA at an accredited four-year academic institution. The GRE's are not required. (also see # 15)
4) How long does it take to complete a MA in Political Science/Urban Policy? If you attend full-time and take 12 credits per semester, and take summer classes, you can finish in about 1 year. Most students take about 2 years.
5) Can I take all my classes at 25 Broadway? Yes, and you can also take classes on the main campus. Facilities on the main campus include a world class library and swimming pool, fitness center, and writing center.
6) Can I take classes at other CUNY campuses or other programs? Yes, with prior approval, you can take up to 9 credits in a different program.
7) What kinds of jobs are available upon graduation? Our students use the degree for upward job mobility in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.
8) What other academic and degree options will I have when I complete the Urban Masters program? Some of our students go on to doctoral programs, some go to law school, and some go for additional masters degrees in related fields.
9) How does the JD/MA program with Brooklyn Law school work? You must apply to both programs independently. We recommend that you take one program at a time. Brooklyn Law requires the LSAT. Upon completion of either program, 9 credits are automatically transferable and are joint.
10) Do you provide financial aid? Graduate financial aid is limited. NY State has loans and grants. Also see Brooklyn College’s web page for a list of graduate scholarships and fellowships.
11) Do you have internships? Yes, we have a wide variety and growing list of internships, including some that are paid and some unpaid.
12) Do I need permission to register for classes? Yes, in most cases we encourage and/or require permission to register for class. This gives us an opportunity to make sure you select the proper course, and we can become more familiar with the individual student. Email Pam Miller (MPMiller@brooklyn.cuny.edu) with the class that you want to register, include your phone number, and we will confirm or contact you. you may also make an appointment to discuss your registration.
13) Is there a particular sequence of courses? As long as you take the combination of required and elective courses, there is no particular sequence, though your academic progress will be tracked by our program.. However, 717X Masters Seminar is generally the last course in the sequence (permission only), and internships are not generally offered in the first semester.
14) Are all classes held during the evening? Yes, we have two time slots for classes. Students may take two courses in a single evening: 5:30-7:20PM, and 7:30-9:20PM
15) Can I attend full-time? Yes, but most students attend part-time
16) If I don’t have a 3.0 GPA, should I still apply: If you have strong letters of recommendation, and your personal statement explains your circumstances, you should apply. We have conditional admission options, so you could be admitted on a probationary basis in the event that you are a strong candidate but not at the 3.0 GPA level.
17) Do you take transfer credits: After you complete 6 credits in our program, we will evaluate transfer credits. You will need a course description/syllabus and any other information that would help us to evaluate a specific course equivalency. If course credits have been applied towards the successful completion of a degree, credits cannot be counted twice.
18) Do you accept international/foreign students? Yes.
