Political modernization of developing areas. Process of transition from traditionalism to modernism. Developing political institutions and changing political processes in specific regions. Process of development. Characteristic problems of societies at various stages of development. Patterns of interaction between developing and industrially advanced societies. Impact of these relations on world politics.

Learning Objectives:

Students will gain an understanding of

  1. First-hand acquaintance with Cuban society and culture at present.
  2. The long-time movement for independence from colonial rule and national self determination.
  3. The role of the super-powers during the Cold War in response to the Cuban  Revolution.
  4. The consequences of Cold War politics on Cuban economic and foreign affairs.
  5. Cuban political development at present, and prospects for future transformation
  6. Cuban social development in terms of racial and minority equality
  7. Economic development at the crossroadfs: equality v. growth

 

Itinerary: Visiting Havana Cuba, University of Havana, The Museum of Revolution, Last Terrazas, The Cuban Multidisciplinary Centre for the Study of Sexuality; Meetings with the Ministry of Public Health Officials,  Officials of the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba (Cuban Trade Union Federation), researchers, and Cuban political analysts.
