Magner Center for Career Development and Internships
Each spring and summer the Magner Center for Career Development and Internships offers students the opportunity to compete for internship stipend awards. The stipends range from $1,500 to $5,000 to cover the costs of low or non paying internships. This is a great way for a student to take an internship he or she would not have otherwise been able to afford. Last year the college awarded nearly $250,000 in
stipend awards. We encourage students to do as many internships as possible while they are at the college. All majors can apply.
The awards are competitive, so students need to apply early. If students are applying for spring awards they must have their internship in place by Monday, March 3 (there are specific deadline dates for each stipend award). Applications for the stipends are now available at the
Magner Center, 1303 James Hall. For more information about the awards you or your students can contact the Magner Internship Program at intern@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
ETR Internship Program Welcome to the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs. While anyone who knew him knows that Ed Rogowsky cannot be replaced, it is a very special honor to carry his mantle—to bring “education for the public service” to the students of The City University of New York. It is in that spirit that I view our on-going mission: To make it possible for student interns at all of our participating colleges to experience the importance of acting in the public interest; to help them discover who they are by serving others; and to give them the opportunity to see, first-hand, that “government” is not so far away, that it is right here, and that it can be a vehicle to personal fulfillment in the midst of making things better for our communities. I hope that this will be one of many visits to our website. Not only will the site allow you to keep track of those public service learning opportunities that are regularly available, such as the Internship & Seminar in Government and Public Affairs each semester, or the New York State Legislative Internship Programs in Albany each spring. Even more, it will enable you to learn about new and exciting initiatives, all intended to bolster your intellectual progress, while preparing you for a complex world outside of the classroom. Root-Tilden-Kern Public Interest Scholarship Program The Root-Tilden-Kern Program is the nation’s premier public service scholarship. Established in 1951, the scholarship has an impressive history; scholarship alumni are some of the most powerful public service attorneys at work today. The program pays full tuition, without regard to financial need, for three years of law school to outstanding students who promise to pursue public service. Scholars may also receive loans to cover living expenses, on demonstration of need. Each year twenty scholars are selected based on three criteria: commitment to public service, academic excellence, and potential for leadership. In addition to full tuition, scholars participate in a program that nurtures future public service leaders by providing unique educational, mentoring, and networking opportunities. The program defines public service broadly: encompassing policy and legal positions with government (including judicial clerkships), electoral politics, non-profit organizations, academia, social entrepreneurship, community development, and law firms whose primary mission is serving the public interest.NYU strives to ensure that the Root-Tilden-Kern scholars are diverse in terms of race, sex, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, geographic origins, and ideology. NYU considers personal/family history of educational or socio-economic disadvantage. The program believes that diversity is critical to fostering a strong public interest profession.Within the Root-Tilden-Kern program, there are several named scholarships focusing on specific issues. Students receiving those scholarships participate in all Root-Tilden-Kern activities and are chosen in the same selection process.
